Reality Check

A landmark decision by an Employment Tribunal, which ruled that Uber drivers should be classified as workers will have far reaching consequences for many businesses that operate similar technology platforms.

In the 40 page document that set out the Tribunal’s reasons for its judgement – the gap between the way Uber said it operated and the way it actually operated was highlighted several times. However, this could be true for any organisation, as Peter Senge highlighted over 25 years ago – people do not always behave in a way that is consistent with what they say.

It is only when we understand what people actually do and why they do it in particular ways that we can begin to identify how to improve their performance.
